After first term finals, Paul finds himself at the top of his medical school class. His persistence continues as he graduates medical school with top marks. For his internship, he chooses Seattle Grace in Washington, and enrolls in the surgical program. There, he finds friendship in the other interns, even becoming roommates with some of them. The internship program calls for an intense schedule, with 48-hour shifts that leave Paul extremely tired during his night’s sleep. His social life is restricted to the hospital, however, as he is too tied up with his job. He is romantically involved with another intern and they soon rent an apartment and decide to live together. However, this relationship severely threatens his job, so he is forced to decide between his girlfriend and his occupation. He chooses the latter, which leads to his ex-girlfriend’s resignation and eventual suicide. This devastates Paul, as he becomes an alcoholic. By now, Paul is an attending surgeon at Seattle Grace, almost in his 30s, and somewhat socially awkward, and yet he still exhibits workaholic behavior. The chief of surgery tips Paul to become a chief in the future. This pushes Paul even further, until one day, still drunk; he was operating on a patient with appendicitis. Due to his unsteady grip in an otherwise simple procedure, he led to the death of the patient. The other doctors and nurses cover up for him and lie that the operation was mistaken for a tumor procedure. However, Paul was emotionally and mentally damaged beyond repair, with his social life crumbling around him, his ex-girlfriend’s suicide, and now the death of his patient. Overcome with grief, Paul drinks a tequila too many and dies of liver failure.
